PCH Custom Tenor #70 – “Black Bear”

All-Solid Malaysian Blackwood & Bearclaw Sitka Spruce. Handcrafted by Phil Henderson

The “Black Bear” is one of those ukuleles you don’t see very often. Phil Henderson paired Malaysian Blackwood back and sides with a Bearclaw Sitka spruce top, and the result is a tenor with a bold visual presence and a voice that’s clean, articulate, and full of character.

Malaysian Blackwood is known for its depth and clarity. It’s in the same family as African Blackwood and has that rich, dark tap tone players love. When you put that up against a Bearclaw Sitka top, you get a punchy response with just enough shimmer on the high end to make fingerstyle and melodic work feel effortless. Strummers will appreciate the balance; nothing gets muddy, even when you dig in a little.

Phil builds everything by hand in Northern California, one ukulele at a time. No assembly line, no shortcuts. Every PCH instrument is voiced individually, and you can feel that care as soon as you play the first chord. His builds are known for being lightweight, resonant, and responsive right out of the case. The “Black Bear” is a great example of his style: clean lines, subtle appointments, and a focus on tone first.

Why Players Love Phil Henderson Ukuleles

Phil’s instruments have a reputation for being “feel-good” ukes. They’re comfortable, beautifully voiced, and built with a woodworker’s eye for detail. He selects tonewoods the way a chef selects ingredients: small batches and only the best pieces. His waiting list continues to grow because players know they’re getting something unique and handmade, not just another factory build with a fancy finish.
